Bible Verses About Guidance
Most people looking for guidance want the same thing: the answer, in advance, in writing.
That is almost never what Scripture describes. What it offers instead is a lamp for the step in front of you, a promise that the steps are being ordered, and a striking amount of instruction about character rather than about choices.
Twelve passages below, quoted in full in both translations. The most quoted of them is also the most misread, and there is a note explaining why.
12 verses for when you need them
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6 KJVNotice what is not asked for: understanding. Lean not unto thine own understanding is the condition, and the acknowledgement is in all thy ways rather than only the large ones. It is a posture, not a technique.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Psalm 119:105 KJVA lamp unto my feet — an oil lamp lit a step or two ahead, not a floodlight over the whole road. The image sets the expectation, and the expectation is deliberately small.
The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.
Proverbs 16:9 ESVA man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.
Proverbs 16:9 KJVBoth halves are affirmed. The woman does plan, and that is not treated as presumption; what the proverb adds is that the steps actually taken are established elsewhere. It is a description of most lives looked at backwards.
And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

Isaiah 30:21 KJVA voice behind thee. The guidance arrives as correction while you are already walking, not as a briefing before you set off — which means moving is part of how it is received.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
James 1:5 ESVIf any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
James 1:5 KJVThe clause most people skip is upbraideth not: asking does not come with a lecture about why you should have known already. For anyone who finds admitting confusion costly, that is the operative part of the verse.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
Psalm 32:8 ESVI will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
Psalm 32:8 KJVI will guide thee with mine eye. The picture is of someone close enough to catch your look — guidance as attention rather than instruction, which is a quieter thing than a command.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11 ESVFor I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Jeremiah 29:11 KJVThe most quoted verse on this page and the most detached from its setting. It is written to exiles in Babylon, and the surrounding verses tell them to build houses and plant gardens because they will be there seventy years. The promise is real; the timescale is a lifetime.
Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.

Proverbs 11:14 KJVSafety is in the multitude — plural, deliberately. One trusted friend who agrees with you is a friendship; several is a check. Guidance here is a social process, not a private one.
He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.
Psalm 25:9 ESVThe meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.
Psalm 25:9 KJVThe meek will he guide in judgment. The qualification is not intelligence or certainty but teachability, which is inconvenient if you arrived hoping to be told you were right.
And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.
Isaiah 58:11 ESVAnd the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
Isaiah 58:11 KJVA watered garden, and a spring whose waters fail not. The guidance is bound up with being sustained rather than merely directed — and the verses before it are about feeding the hungry, which is where the promise is attached.
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
John 16:13 ESVHowbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
John 16:13 KJVHe will guide you into all truth. Said to the disciples the night before the arrest, about a guide who had not yet arrived — so the promise is corporate and long-range, not a technique for choosing between two jobs.
The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way;
Psalm 37:23 ESVThe steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
Psalm 37:23 KJVThe steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD. The KJV adds and he delighteth in his way, which shifts the tone: this is not surveillance but pleasure taken in the walking.
Put them together and the shape is consistent: light for the next step, not the whole route.
Psalm 119:105 is a lamp to the feet — the smallest possible radius. Proverbs 3:5-6 asks for trust and acknowledgement rather than analysis. Proverbs 16:9 affirms that you will plan, and says the steps are established elsewhere. Isaiah promises a voice behind you saying this is the way, which is a correction as you walk rather than a briefing before you start.
Which is frustrating if you wanted the map, and freeing if you have been treating every decision as a test you might fail.
And Jeremiah 29:11 deserves its note read twice. It is a real promise, made to real people, about seventy years — most of the original audience died in Babylon. That does not make it less true. It makes it a promise on a scale that outlasts the person holding it.
